Looking Good – Mixed media Gelatin Print

mixed media gelatin print by linda germainThis mixed media gelatin print is printed on a map and then collaged on to the index card for the ICAD challenge.  I love working on papers that already have a story or history.  I think that is can draw the viewers into the print and invite them to take a closer look.

Tools I used for this……..

so Cool – Mixed Media Gelatin Plate Monotype

mixed media gelatin plate monotype print by linda germainToday for the ICAD challenge I made a mixed media gelatin plate monotype print with –

  • gelatin print with speedball inks
  • printed with a regular ‘ol gelatin plate
  • a paper masking stencil of a pair of glasses
  • charcoal text and outline
  • on an index card
  • printed ink on the back to get it to lay flat

I like how the gold, red and yellow mixed in this back ground.

Watch a video of the gelatin plate printing technique I used here.

I was in the flow once I started printing and made a whole stack of similar mixed media gelatin plate monotype prints.  Some are on maps, phone book pages and of course index cards. These glasses remind me of summer.  I am not sure why.

Stay cool!

Playing in the Studio with Gelatin Monotype Prints

©linda germain 2012  Another method for clean edges thanks to Mark Evans

Check out Mark Evan’s gelatin prints.  They are vibrant and graphic.  Always an inspiration to see what other people do with the gelatin plate.

Yesterday he shared is method for registering his print and getting the nice clean edges.  He places a “mat” on the plate and then lines his paper up with the edge of the mat.

That is what I tried to show you in the print above.  I made several prints with this method today and had success.  So we have options!

Happy Printing.

Thermofax screen prints on Canvas

©2012 linda germain mixed media print on canvas

This is a 5″ x 7″ canvas with collage and paint background.  Today I used 4 different thermofax screens to finish it.  I was experimenting with cheap acrylic paint and speedball screen inks.  I used a cosmetic sponge to apply the ink/paint to the screen.  The four screen added texture, connection and focus.  I will try to point out the screens:

  1. The girl
  2. the light blue circles
  3. the green circles with criss cross in the middle
  4. and the hardest to see the illegible blue handwriting on the right side
Happy printing!

I started layering some square boxes yesterday with the intent of doing a few bird prints.  It is a challenge to print on a hard surface with another hard object.  I am used to printing on paper with any kind of found object that comes my way.  So I figured out that I could print with the hard object on to soft foam and then transfer the paint to the box from the foam.  That is how I made the black circle marks above.  Kind of an offset type process.  Happy Printing!
