printmaking without a press demo

Printmaking without a press how is that possible? Actually you are probably very familiar with some printmaking techniques that do not require a press.

Screen printing – everyone has a screen printed t-shirt.

Rubber stamping – This process has be come very familiar to crafters and scrapbooking enthusiasts.

Stenciling – is common. Most of us have seen or used alphabet stencils to make a poster.

A less common process is monotype printing. You will have to come to the Market to see this one!

Come by the Haverhill Artist Market and ask questions, watch demo and maybe even try out one or more of these printmaking without a press techniques.

I will have the tools that I use to make my mixed media prints available and will be giving demos through out the day.

One of my goals is to demystify printmaking and help to make it accessible to everyone. Hope to see you at the Art Market next week.

Thermofax prints for texture

I love lots of layers in a mixed media print. I like to draw the viewer in for a closer look into the layers of marks that make up the whole print.

Homemade Gelatin and glycerin plate print with Thermofax screen print

Screen printing with the thermo fax screen is great for times when you want to make lot’s of impressions of the same design. So today I played with 17 small prints and 4 book spreads and one spirograph screen.

Thermo fax screens are good for line drawings and details that you can’t get with other types of screen printing. I made this spirograph drawing, photocopied it and then burned a screen with my 3M transparency maker.

You only need a couple of screens to get started playing with this method of screen printing. I put together a kit of

  • 8 untaped screens, as shown below and
  • access to a lesson and 4 videos to prepare the screens,
  • pull prints, ideas for surfaces to print on and
  • how to care for your screen.

Piles of paper with potential

piles of gelatin plate prints

There are many reasons why I have pile of prints:

  • It takes time for me to get into the flow of printing.
  • Gelatin printing is experimental and often uncontrollable
  • I love the process more than the final product.

But sometimes I like to make a finished product or print.

  • Cut and collage
  • Crop and frame
  • Fold, sew and make a book
