Gelatin Printing Cards – reindeer and doilies

I was playing with the gift of doilies that I got from Terri Stegmiller.  I first experimented with what kind of marks I could get from the doily.  They are nice and sturdy.  I made a pile of prints and cropped a few into some cards.

Three ways to get an impression with the doily:

  1. gently press the doily into the inked plate – try not to wiggle it.  This gives you a dark field print.
  2. ink the doily and then lay it on the clean plate and gently press.  This gives you a light field impression
  3. lay the doily on the inked plate, do a newsprint pick up, remove the doily and then print.  This gives you a gray field print.

I like the mark that is created when I ink the doily by laying it in the thin layer of ink on the gelatin plate, rather than inking the doily with the brayer.  It creates a nice thin line.   Remember to use the gelatin and it’s malleability  to transfer ink and impressions when ever possible.

Moving the Gelatin Plate to the Refrigerator

© linda germain 2012 Let the gelatin harden before moving it to the refrigerator

My niece told me that the first time she made the gelatin plate she tried to put it in the refrigerator right away, just after pouring it into the shallow plan.  ooooh  what a messy spill!   So I share her story so you don’t have a mess of gelatin to clean  up.  I let the gelatin harden on the counter top before I try to move it to the refrigerator.  If you make the plate in a container with higher sides then I imagine that it would be easy to put it into the refrigerator right away.

Cutting a Masking stencil for Gelatin Prints

©2012 linda germain  – Preparing a stencil for gelatin printing

Last month I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC and  was inspired by Ellsworth Kelly‘s plant drawings.  The line is simple, confident and expressive.  Hmmmmm!  So I said I was going to do a line drawing a day.  Well I made it for about 7 days.  I hung them up and did enjoy them.  Today I decided to photocopy one and make a stencil for gelatin printmaking.  I am applying a few coats of mat meduim so that it will with stand the wear and tear of gelatin printing.

8 Gelatin Printmaking Techniques

©2012 Linda Germain – Gelatin Prints on the Studio wall

I just wrote to an artist friend, and I started listing some of the new techniques that I have learned in gelatin printmaking in the last 6 months or so.

Some of the things that I have been doing

  1. printing on slippery poster board –
  2. printing big by working in strips and rectangles on a large sheet with the 10 x 13 gelatin
  3. The pre-inked stencil for the “picture” affect.
  4. Using a photo reference – that makes it personal
  5. Masking and taping for a finished look.
  6. Charcoal handwriting transfer
  7. Cutting up the gelatin into shapes for printing
  8. Freezing the Gelatin for reuse
Wow!  I have been busy.  Well when it is fun time just flies.  Most of these processes are in the picture above. Happy Printing!

Trim up old crusty Gelatin Plate and Print

©2012 linda germain – Cut the Edge off old Gelatin and Print a series

As you may know I keep my gelatin plateas long as I can, because I love the unpredictable marks that is can create.  Sometimes it gets a hard edge, so a simple fix is to cut off the hard edge with a sharp razor blade.  I use a big square when I want to have a straight edge.

I spent the last few days putting together a 4 page pamphlet.  Wow it was a lot of learning.  I am having them printed with Magcloud.  Encaustic artist, Linda Cordner published a catalog of some of her art and she was please with the product so I thought I would give it a try.
Happy Printing!
