Stamping tools for Monotype Printing

Stamping tools can be found anywhere.

I have a whole 8 foot table dedicated to my stamping tools for monotype printmaking. I share a few of my favorites with you in the photo above.

Relief stamp of elastic bands
Caps and thread spools
Sprockets
Rubber bath stickies
Handmade stamper with ear buds
Block of wood with great grain
Kids wooden blocks
Wide combs
Cut glass

I am always noticing objects as potential mark making tools. These tools work especially well with the gelatin plate. Because the plate is malleable it can hold the delicate mark that is made in the ink. Then with mere hand pressure you transfer the impression to your print paper.

Hand printing some business cards

I like to use recycled papers. These cards are printed on paint samples that I got from the Reuse store in Lynn MA. I used a thermofax screen and love how I can have a stack of cards all different colors.

I am getting ready for the Haverhill Holiday Sale and I used some of the cards on the tree with small artwork and cards.

Embrace the unexpected when Gelatin Printmaking

I think that it is the imperfections of this monotype print that make it beautiful. You can see this original print at the Made in Haverhill Holiday shop, 30 Emerson Street, Haverhill.

I made this print with just one twig as my stencil.
I printed only portions of the plate at a time
I put both he shaped impression and the detailed impression on the same piece of paper
All the random holes and marks were made but defects in a very old gelatin plate
