christmas card printed with Tyvek stencil and gelatin plate

Gelatin printmaking is a low tech way to make lots of hand pulled prints, even if you have limited space.  It is non-toxic and very easy to learn the basics.

But I want to help you to grow beyond the basics to absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!!

I have created this class with a specific project  – hand printed cards. There are many ways to approach making cards.

We will focus on one method and then add a few variations.

You will be able to make hundreds of unique one of a kind, hand printed cards in a very short time.

  • brainstorm for image ideas – use drawings, photos and copyright free images
  • tweak and transform a image into a masking stencil with a frame

Supplies:

We will be using some specific tools that I have discovered hold and transfer ink in a most satisfying way. These tools are not hard to find, you just may need to plan ahead and purchase them online.

You maybe be able to make substitutes for the Tyvek® and the speedball water based block printing ink, but that may affect the type of impression that you get. If you have questions please email me. linda@lindagermain.com

Stencil making supplies –

  • Tyvek® – you can recycle envelopes or you can purchase Jam paper, or some folks have found Tyvek® on Ebay. Tyvek® is a plastic composite that is very strong and also easy to cut, so it is perfect for making stencil
  • I really want you to experience the benefits of Tyvek® – but if you just can’t find any, it is possible to cut stencils from drawing paper, mylar or plastic.
  • X-acto knife and sharp blades
  • Self healing cutting mat
  • Fine point Water based washable marker (like kids Crayola)
  • Tape
  • Sunny window
  • ideas, images or copyright free clip art

Minimum supplies that you will need for printing:

  • 4” SOFT rubber brayers least one – But 2 – 4 of varying sizes would be more convenient
  • Speedball water based block printing ink – Starter kit or a few of your favorite colors, I like black, cyan, processes yellow, magenta, gold and orange and turquoise. small tubes will take you a long way.
  • a big tube of ink retarder – keeps the inks workable longer
  • Plexi glass palette for ink and one for the gelatin plate (glass or flexible cutting mat good too)
  • Spray bottle for water
  • Rags to clean brayer
  • Card stock – light colored
  • scrap newspaper – lots

Making the gelatin printing plate:

This class does include the lessons on how to make the gelatin and glycerin plate. But you can get them for FREE HERE and make the plate before class starts.

I use and like the homemade gelatin and glycerin printing plate. I think it is more malleable and transfers the water based inks in the most unique way. I know the manufactured gel plates are convenient and popular. If you already have your special way of gelatin printing with a special combination of ink/paint, brayers and type of plate, then you can most likely use this supplies to learn this Tyvek stencil card making process. If you have questions about this please email linda@lindagermain.com

Marsha happy student in Make Monotypes with Linda GermainIf you think that you can’t learn in an online environment, think again!

You will be amazed at how much you learn from Linda. Each day she shows you techniques, through her very informative videos. You can play the videos again and again to further understand the process.

I learned the basics – making a plate, rolling ink (this took some practice!) and pulling a print. I am pleased with this. I feel that I can really move on and explore this technique in greater depth on my own.
