Believe relief stamp for day 28 of #SEEdrawPrint

Today I carved a tiny stamp – “Believe” I thought I might use it to add a little something to  some ornaments that I am working on. I had originally made a thermofax screen of the word, believe. I test printed it and could not get it to print consistently.

The style of the mark may be too primitive to go with the style of the ornaments. But I was impressed that I could even carve such a small and detailed block.

Is it nice to have the confidence to just jump in and make a block, screen or stencil when I want a new design to play with.

Tools for making relief block

I say give it a try! Just jump in and make the printmaking matrix that you need, be it a screen, a drawing, relief block or a stencil. You can do it!

Queen Anne’s Lace monoprint

Today, for day 27 of the #SEEdrawprint challenge, I picked up some dried Queen Anne’s lace on my walk and did a wax rubbing monoprint.

These flowers were quite dried and brittle. I tried to flatten the branches to separate them and make an interesting print.

I used a wide black crayon to make the monoprint on rice paper. I like the quick and experimental nature of this process. Again I am realizing that I like to skip the “draw” part of the process and find ways to print without having to draw to make prints.

Trace monoprint of a water stain day #26

I discovered this beautiful water stain as I was cleaning the studio. It became the inspiration for my #seedrawPrint for day #26.

I like the organic map like quality of the mark.

ink on the palette for trace monoprint

I rolled out some brown and gold speedball block printing ink and added a bit of retarder.

I laid the print paper on the ink then did a light newsprint pick up. Then put a photo copy of thethe water stained paper on top. and traced the contour lines with a pen and pencil.

Marbled monotypes for day #25 of SEEdrawPrint

Light rain and the raindrops in puddles inspired me to make some marbled monotypes for today’s #SeeDrawPrint challenge.

I used nontoxic suminagashi inks and a small water bath. I pulled about 5 prints. It is easy to get addicted and to be lost in the process.

Inks floating on the surface ready to print

You need to have a very still and level surface. Today the trains and the the roof fan on my studio were vibrating the table.

suminagashi ink for marbling paper

I like a kind of modern print with big bold shapes of ink. But if the ink is too heavy it starts to sink below the surface as in the image above.

Marbleized paper with suminagashi inks

I tried printed over some orange prints that I pulled a few months ago. It worked ok but the paper did not absorb all the black ink and it smeared a bit. I think I might try covering some small notebooks with a few of these prints.

Experimental screen print for day #24

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Today I made a wax crayon rubbing of a soft block relief plate. I used a crayon at first and then tried a candle.

screen print with wax resist

I made the rubbing on a curtain sheer and stretched it in an embroidery hoop. The goal is to cover the surface with a dense coating of wax in the high areas of the pink plate, so ink will only pass through the white areas.

I tried the black crayon first, but the wax was not really thick enough, so I tried a candle. The coverage of was was better, but it is still an experimental process.

taped screen ready to print

I taped all the areas where I did not the ink to pass through and did a bunch of test prints.

I think this image would work as a textural layer on some prints that already have a few layers of information.

This was a fun experiment. I will keep the process in mind for future projects where it may be beneficial. If you would like to try screen printing get the FREE tutorial below. Enjoy!
