Cleaning the Printmaking Studio

time to clean the printmaking studio - Linda GermainI love this time of year. It seems like a fresh start and time for new learning. I am not going off to school, but I am looking for a stimulating class to join.

I was considering a solo retreat, but then realized that I wanted the community of a class more than solitude.

As part of my fresh start, I am cleaning the studio, sorting through supplies and prints. I think letting go creates space for something new.

What about you….

  • Do you have seasonal rituals?
  • What if you let go of some tools or supplies that you don’t use?
  • Is there space for something new?

If you are creating space in your life for making prints, and you have been thinking about taking an online class – check out the current offerings.

Refreshing the gelatin plate

make a glycerin and gelatin plate for monotype printmaking
Learn to make your own gelatin plate for printing

I have several gelatin plates frozen in the freezer at my studio. They have been there for a couple of years now.

Since I have been using the new recipe that includes glycerin, I don’t have to make new plates very often. Today I will learn if they can be reconstituted after being in the freezer for such a long time.

  • I used the double boiler type set up to thaw and melt the frozen chunks of gelatin.
  • I added a little water to the mix
  • Leveled my cookie sheet and
  • Poured the melted mixture through a tarlatan into the pan

Since I have to wait for the homemade gelatin plate to harden, I may experiment with the commercially made Gelli plate.

If you would like to learn how to make the glycerin and gelatin plate and then have four weeks of lessons and support then join us in the next session of Make Monotypes – registration opens September 14th and class starts October 5th. Read the details here.
