Wood block design into a thermofax screen

A friend of mine gave me this little wood carved stamping tool. I love to use it on the gelatin plate to lift off and reapply ink.

The block is not flat, so I broke it once by pressing too hard. I was able to glue it back together but there is an interruption in the pattern.

At first I was going to make a screen from the block printed impression, but I decided that the design was too long and the pattern too irregular for a screen printed design. Some designs are better for one printing process than another. So I drew a shorter set of rectangles and burned a screen.

The design printed up nice and crisp. I printed an all over random pattern on a piece of cloth. When it dries I plan to add another pattern or color.

Gelatin Prints for day 7 of #SEEdrawPrint challenge

I realized that my natural printing method is to be inspired by found tools.Which takes the need to draw a matrix out of the equation.

found stamping tool made of rubber

I found this small rubber circle thing while on my daily walk and it inspired me to pick it up. It lifts of ink and applies ink to the gelatin plate perfectly. I that two different size circles that will work nicely together.

Dried fall grasses for stenciling

Autumn in New England there are plenty of leaves and grasses on the ground. I picked up one and gave it a “hair cut”. If the grass is too complex the shape impression ends up being a big white blob.

The other way that I usually work, is to pull many prints to get a couple that I like. I work out the composition as I go.

detail impression and shaped impression pull from the gelatin plate

Today I pulled a stack of prints and then got my framing mats and cropped up a couple into pleasing compositions.

This is the shaped impression of the grasses and I used my found tool to lift off and then apply circle impressions to the plate.

This is the detailed impression of the grasses and I stamped a few more circle on to the plate with my round rubber circle tool.

This one I place the little pieces of grass back on to the detailed impression to “save” some white marks and increase the range of value. And I was playing with random design rather than a balance one.

Stencil print for #SeeDrawPrint challenge

Today for my 30 day challenge I cut a stencil out of a manilla folder of my sister’s dog. I reduced the size of the image to fit on a 3 inch wooden ornament.

I cut is slowly with a sharp blade, being careful to keep all the interesting negative shapes in the ears, tail and legs.

hand cut stencil of dog on monotype

I used a circle cutter and cut some circles from my gelatin plate monotype prints. Then I stenciled the dog on the papers. Then I glued the papers to the wooden disc. I drilled a hole in the disc and threaded some ribbon through he top.

Thermofax screen print of stylized leaf

I have extra time to print and play, so I did a few drawings of some stylized leaves and turned one into a thermofax screen.

leaf drawing for screen print

I think the SEE part of my 30 day #SEEdrawPrint challenge is about seeing the everyday stuff with artist’s eyes. I hope to notice things that I would not normally.

Thermofax screen of leaf drawing

A thermofax screen is created by placing a carbon copy against the emulsion coated screen mesh and running it through the Thermofax machine. The machine “burns” the emulsion away where the carbon is and creates a screen for printmaking.

It is a great way to get a detailed line drawing matrix. I bought the machine about 4 years ago and thought I would use it a lot more than I do.

I did a random all over pattern of this abstract leaf on a flour sack. FUN!

Dry point etching – winter tree

Today, I was inspired by the trees that are loosing all their leaves. I did a small 4″ square sketch and reduced it a little so it would fit on my plexiglass plate.

I reversed my image with the “window light box”. Then scratched in the lines. This image was a good choice for this method of printmaking.

Pasta machine printing press

I dampened some masa paper and some rice paper. Using Akua Intaglio, I inked the plate and ran a few prints. I have not done this process much. The “pasta machine press” is small and the 4″ plate has to be eased out the bottom.

This process is not how I usually work. I have to wear a mask, because I am sensitive to the inks. The inks are messy and harder to clean up than the speedball water based block printing inks. But all the same, I had fun with the experiment.

Day 4 of my #SEEdrawPrint challenge and I am already trying new things. The drawing is the hardest part of the challenge for me. I usually make marks with found tools and stencils. If you would like a drawing tutorial then check out my drawing with Matisse lesson below.
