Printmaking Inspired by spring blossoms

I found these delicate little spring blossoms on my way home from the library today. Look at the shape of the petal. So perfect. I am going to do some more stencils based on these gently curving petals

flowers inspiring printmaking

Just yesterday, I cut a few 6 point flowers from some triple folded copy paper. I was pleased with the cutting, but not really a big fan of the shape of the stencil.

So I cut a rectangular strip of connected flowers and tried printing with them on the glycerin and gelatin plate. Happy with the results. The rectangle is a more familiar shape that will work with my other stash of stencils.

If you want to try cutting some six pointed flowers or snowflake then watch my quick little video. The only tricky part is getting the 60 degree angle of the fold.

I found a few prints that I pulled last week and decided to add some focus and darker marks.

I picked one sturdy fern that I had preserved with glycerin and water a few weeks ago.

I like the uneven and interesting negative shapes that theses fern have.

I used Versatex screen printing ink and played for about 1/2 hour and I am happy with the results.

There are special benefits of using the gelatin plate and screen printing inks to print on fabric.

  • The gelatin plate is malleable and can hold a detailed impression in the ink and then with mere hand pressure it can be transferred to the fabric.
  • Other tools like ferns and feather can be combined with the gelatin plate to create delicate details.
  • You do not need a press or special printmaking studio
  • It is a water based, non-toxic process

Prep fabric for Printing

When I start printing I like to stay in the flow. Flow is when the magic happens. So if I spend a day or 2 getting the materials ready then I can stay in the creative flow when I am pulling prints.

Wash fabric to remove sizing and ready for printing

Soak or wash fabric in hot water with detergent to remove sizing and get the fabric ready for printing.

Wash and dry fabric prior to printing

I like to dry my fabric the same way I would dry it under usual circumstance. This will pre-shrink it.

Gelatin printmaking is amazing because the maker can pull delicate impressions very rapidly when using delicate tools and an ink that can hold the edge of the impression.

Some times it takes some experimentation to find the best combination of ink, tools and fabric. Once factor that is an additional challenge when printing on fabric is the competing texture of the fabric. It is easier to find smooth absorbent paper than it is to find similar fabric.

Another consideration when monoprinting with the gelatin plate on fabric is the intended use. If the hand printed fabric is going to be use for wall hangings and mixed media art pieces then you do not have to be concerned with durability or washability.

Some folks like to use the hand printed fabric in wearable art or quilts. Then you need to find the best ink or paint intended for that purpose. The printed fabric should be fixed or set according to manufacturers instructions. Even then I think the fabric should be gently cared for.

If you would like some help making the gelatin plate and learning to print on fabric, then you are in luck. The Monoprinting Fabric workshop is open for registration. Check out the details on the printmaking workshop page.
