Why playing will make better gelatin monotype prints?

Gelatin printing is experimental and unpredicatble by nature of the gelatin plate.  Playing allows for happy surprises to occur.  I try to embrace these ideas –

    • if you think it then try it
    • go with the flow
    • be present to the materials
    • let go of expectations
    • trust in the process
    • take advantage of the sponginess of the plate
    • be willing to fail
    • if you are pleased with a few fabulous print in a day then you are successful
    • try not to force outcomes
    • give yourself the gift of play

  • often the prints that happen during clean up are the best
  • fearless experimentation can lead to extraordinary results
What do you need to be able to play while printmaking?
For me it’s:
  • inexpensive paper
  • time
  • space
  • gentle reminders that play has the potential and possibilities
  • ink that is easy to work with and easy to clean up.

  1. I recently did monoprinting on fabric using a mixture of different kinds of paints. I mixed regular acrylic, textile paints, fluid acrylics, and some water. I pressed the edge of a cardboard toilet paper roll here and there to create oval shapes. I pressed slightly moistened cotton fabric onto it. The result was a very textured fabric with a lot of graininess. It wasn’t the result I was trying to get, but I ended up loving it and used the fabrics together on my latest art quilt. I posted photos of the fabrics and parts of the quilt on my blog. I love monoprinting now and am big follower of yours.

  2. You’re right about taking time to play, I’ve been monoprinting with only one print on each sheet and they turned out gorgeous! Your fault I started on monoprinting! LOL I follow all you do!
