Cutting a Masking stencil for Gelatin Prints

©2012 linda germain  – Preparing a stencil for gelatin printing

Last month I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC and  was inspired by Ellsworth Kelly‘s plant drawings.  The line is simple, confident and expressive.  Hmmmmm!  So I said I was going to do a line drawing a day.  Well I made it for about 7 days.  I hung them up and did enjoy them.  Today I decided to photocopy one and make a stencil for gelatin printmaking.  I am applying a few coats of mat meduim so that it will with stand the wear and tear of gelatin printing.

  1. Hmm.. Why use paper? How about acetate? I haven’t tried acetate stencils for gelatin printing yet but I’ve used them in other ways. There are also these little yellow scissors. Cutter Bee scissors. You can get them on amazon and some craft stores have them. It’s amazing how detailed a cut you can get with them. I still use exacto knives for some things but my cutter bee scissors are indispensable.

  2. Tyvek makes a great mask for mono printing too and you can use it as collage when it gets colorful enough.

  3. You can also put the drawing between to sheets of clear contact paper and cut it out. They last a long time and you can still use them in a collage when they get covered with paint.
